While the government of General Ironsi, to which the british Government gave the most lukwarm support, was in every sense legal and constitutional, based on an abdication and transfer by the rump of the old federal government, which had been particularly bloodless, General Gowon, who was not even by any means Ironsi's senior officer, waded through seas of blood to seize power by ruthless coup d'etat, which the British government rewarded with immidiate and eager recognition.
